Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

OK the AA man has been and just confirmed that we’ve done everything we can and agreed that it’s pointing at the ECU in some form. We sprayed carb cleaner down the air intake and it fired up (not great but it fired) Discussed everything we’d done and he came to the same conclusion. He looked at the ...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

But I got this from Pelican:- 1. If you have spark and all that is missing is the fuel your sensors are good. Period. 2. The injectors need permanent +12V on one side and the pulse (GND) from the DME on the other and fuel pressure of course. Currently expecting the AA any minute - will write again o...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

OK so it’s not gone well…. But we think we’ve narrowed it down. Nige came round (thank a million Nige) and we spent all morning on it OK so - Fuel is fine - pouring out - while cranking Spark is fine However connecting a noid bulb across the injector socket gives no light at all while cranking - it ...

Thanks Nige. Are you around tomorrow? An extra brain and pair of hands would be great.

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Thanks for all those comments and links guys I dont know what the immobiliser immobilises. My system uses the original crank sensors and neither have been touched throughout the recent work. Those posts are interesting. The cylinder head sensor one was surprising. I’ve read up on using loctite on ea...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

OK so plan (c?) is this I’ve now fitted the anti-roll bar and the rear wheels and lowered it off the lift. I’m going to put the engine stand and engine hoist away and then phone the AA to say it’s not starting (I do pay for homestart) - I’m tied up tomorrow but aim to do it on Wednesday I’ll let the...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Just throwing ideas out there… What actually makes the spark on your car? I know you have the CANEM ecu for the fuel but where does the spark come from? Pixies. Or It’s the Canems DIS ignition conversion kit - does away with the dizzy. I fitted a spark detector inline with the plug on number 4 cyli...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Just thinking out loud here, I see in the pictures you have a TOAD alarm, so is the immobiliser shot, or not actually working, or did you remove all that gubbins in the rebuild process? Although the toad is quite old it’s always worked well - it disarms and arms fine. I had it installed about 15 ye...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Is the fuel pump still running whilst cranking? Can hear it ignition on, but not when the starter is going. My hearing’s not great so I can’t be sure. There was pressure in the fuel system but I guess that could have come from the priming. The DME relay also controls the fuel pump. I tested that an...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Yep I reckon I could have lifted the car with it!

Anyway back to re-inserting the intakes and then resumption of diagnostics.

I may end up calling the AA again…..

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Thanks Gary. OK I got to look properly at the plug and the socket. Fortunately/unfortunately both are perfect https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240422/203ffd08ee328f928c436cbd8bf57e78.jpg I took them both apart took out the connectors and wiggled them about and they are all solid as a rock. Well I’...
