Re: 3D printed 911 parts

I saw someone selling 3d printed replicas of the bakelite Kostal Porsche connector housings on ebay a few months ago. It amused me that they were printed from carbon fibre infused filemant on an FDM printer. I get that the short carbon strands makes them more similar to the bakelite in terms of stif...

The custom tinware and air filters are going to look very cool once they're all assembled onto the finished engine.

Re: Steering Wheel Spacer?

I didn't realise there was a 'longer' 911 version of the wheel available. Later 914's don't have the spring loaded pin for the horn contact. I am not sure when they changed, but my '75 uses VDM slip ring (VW part number 113415660A), which has a wire to the horn contact instead of the pin. It looks l...

Re: Steering Wheel Spacer?

Moving the standard wheel closer to you would not be straight forward, as the hub is riveted to the wheel. You'd have to drill the rivets out, and replace them with longer bolts, with a machined spacer between the two. I've not seen it done, but I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't work (I ...

Re: New 914 owner

If it is a late 914 with a side shift gearbox ('73 and later models have the superior 'side shift'gear change mechanism if I remember right), the coupling between the front and rear sections of shift rod is accessed from underneath. It is a flexible coupling housed in a rubber boot which clips over ...

Re: Vented disc brake upgrade for 4 stud from Beetle / BMW p

The shaft part of the spindle is the same as a Beetle , as are the wheel bearings. The difference with a 914 / type 4 disc is the positioning ('offset') and the size of the disc part relative to the bearing housings. I've machined the disc part away from a pair of the new aftermarket Beetle 5 x 130 ...

Re: 914 Instrument Panel ( dash ) recovering - assistance wa

I believe it all depends which vinyl you start with. You need some which is designed to be stretched around complex shapes. I think it is called '4 way stretch vinyl'. There is a company in California who vacuum form it onto dashboards to professionally re-cover them, but I have not seen anyone over...

Re: WANTED - Gold '2.0' badge, sail trims, front targa seal

If you can wait for the seals, dash top, etc, get them from 914 Rubber in their Black Friday sale, if they have one again this year. I got almost all the seals for my restoration from them in last year's, at a considerable saving. They also sold off seconds of the big, expensive bits (bumper and das...

Re: Momo prototipo and Boss

The cast (i.e. non collapsible) Momo boss for the 4 cylinder '72-'76 914 is part number 8002. It has a crackle black paint finish, and is reduced in diameter in the middle of the casting. I believe Momo bosses for the earlier 4 cylinder 914 is no longer available (possibly part number 8000), and had...

Re: Help identifying G50 gearbox spec from an unusual code?

I'm answering my own question here, but maybe the info will be of use to someone else. It does have a limited slip diff. I also counted the number of input shaft turns relative to one diff turn in each gear, and compared the results to the standard ratios for a G50/00. This confirms that my weird nu...

Help identifying G50 gearbox spec from an unusual code?

Hi, I've just bought an G50 gearbox, but two things are making it difficult to work out exactly what spec it is. Firstly, the 'G50/XX' part of its code is scraped off (it has been lying around an a workshop for 20 years due to a broken clutch release shaft boss, no doubt having been dragged along th...
