Re: 914 2.0 > 3.0 GT Conversion
Your secure trolley posts are timely, thanks. I'm just about to order the steel to make something similar, only which can also be picked up by a forklift, as I have my shell booked in to be stripped in a few weeks. (I hope that ends up being a good decision, but time will tell!). I had a different a...

Re: re chroming trim pieces
Yes, I spent some time scouring the internet for info on how well the Harrington Group bumpers fit thanks. I couldn't find anyone with experience of the 914 bumpers, but did find plenty of people having major problems with various ones they make for VW's and Triumphs, etc. I found two other companie...

Re: re chroming trim pieces
I had a second quote for re-chroming my bumpers and door handles this week. It was very slightly more than the £1700 I was quoted from above, but from a company who gave me a lot less confidence in their ability. They admitted that they wouldn't be able to get one of them perfect. I think I'll be go...

Re: A Dream Fulfilled - MY 904FF
Have you tried the 914 tacho with a 12V square wave? To my surprise I found the late model ('75) tacho does work from a 12V square wave, unlike every other early VDO electronic tacho I have ever tried (mostly VW). I make an electronic module which converts a 12V square wave to a signal suitable for ...

Re: Anyone had their 914 body shell stripped?
The only company that I am aware of offering any kind of dip painting of shells for restorations in the UK is SPL. All the OEM's dip paint, and some subcontract it to teir 1's like GKN in Telford. It's understandable than few if any of them would want anything they were not totally in control of goi...

Re: Anyone had their 914 body shell stripped?
Yes a 2nd de-rusting is the plan. The company I have been speaking to de-rust again (with a phosphoric acid based solution, not hydrochloric) when the shell goes back for priming. I recently saw a Volvo Amazon shell which they'd stripped and had been coated with some kind of inhibitor (probably iron...

Re: 914 2.0 > 3.0 GT Conversion
Thanks. It turns out that the £8 per disc for the mini grinder I bought was an error after all. I sent a moaning e-mail to the manufacturers, saying there was just no way I'd be paying that much, and the tool would be going back. Their sales director phoned me today thanking me for pointing out what...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
I have thrown parts from friends restoration projects in with my plating orders (which usually consist of new parts) before now, and they have been blown away when they come back looking just like new. Have you seen zinc castings which have been bead blasted, then zinc plated (to get a shiny, smooth...

Re: 914 2.0 > 3.0 GT Conversion
Thank you very much for posting your photos of cutting the rust out in the hell hole area. They are very useful to me, enabling me to see just which bits are double skinned, as mine appears to have an almost identical amount of corrosion as yours did pre repair in this area. Can I ask what you have ...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Hi, I'm new on here as I've just started my first Porsche project, a '75 914. So far I've dismantled it and started separating all the small parts for refinishing. I have a blasting cabinet, and regularly have parts plated and powder coated for my work, so I'll be slipping various 914 parts in with ...

Re: Anyone had their 914 body shell stripped?
Thank you. It's definitely a difficult thing to decide on. I stripped a beetle myself 20+ years ago with scrapers and paint stripper, and remember it taking an unbelievable amount of time. Back then I had the time but minimal money to spend. The materials probably cost under £100, but it probably to...

Re: Clips & clamps
Try Moss Plastics / Essentra Components or Jet Press. They manufacture these type of clips (I just took the fuel pipes out of my 914 2 weeks ago). They tend to be expensive in low volumes, as they really want to sell massive volumes (at least one of them does have an online shop). You may be able to...

Derby Plating is where my quote last week for bumpers and door handles, referenced above, was from.

Re: Anyone had their 914 body shell stripped?
Thank you very much for the replies folks. I believe the ultimate process, based on my research so far would be: 1. Paint / seal sealer / filler stripping in a pyrolysis oven. 2. Rust removal in a phosphoric acid based solution (which eats rust, but not steel, unlike most other acids, but costs an a...
