Re: Another Targa sarga

Thanks Graham, Yes not too many real Brummies about these days, you're an Erdington lad then, I'm from Selly Oak! Yes, 80% rebuilding of the deck lid was a challenge, wheeling the skin, didn't initially seem too difficult, but nothing is straight forward when you realise what is truly involved, but ...

Another Targa sarga

Hi everyone, I thought I'd share my very reverend (holey) 2.7 targa restoration, I had the body shot blasted to reveal the true extent of work needed, oops :crybaby: https://i.postimg.cc/J7pcMvWK/lft_side_footwell_rust.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/tTngVsMB/floor_sills.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/m2LGvcyK/ba...

Re: Repaint, 2nd time round, 73T

The drain tube will work to drain the water that fills the void between the seal & body, alternatively using epoxy primers that give near galvanized protection & using non setting windscreen sealant after painting to fill the void is how I do it, everything stays original this way. The wing ...

Re: Repaint, 2nd time round, 73T

I don't know if you are handy with a mig welder, but if you need to build up an edge a couple of mm's, I'd prefer to mig it, just my 2 cents

Re: Paint preparation, DIY products to be used

Yes I know that raises many an eyebrow, but it's the most convenient, economical and safest way to prime metal at home, even though I have industrial spraying facilities if I need. I would do 1 or 2 panels at a time, buy an infra red patio heater like this..https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laptronix-2KW-E...

Re: Paint preparation, DIY products to be used

If you are stripping to bare metal, then 2k Epoxy prime with a small foam roller, this will be absolutely fine for prep, before going to a body shop. Treat all rust with a rotary wire brush or strippit disc, untill the metal shines, I would never put any faith in miracles rust cures, removal is the ...

Re: Where to get it dipped in primer

I wouldn't obsess about rust, you'll never win on an old car, you have to except you can only slow it down & do your best, paint the external bits, wax oil internally, do it thoroughly & it will outlast you anyway. My advise is to do one panel at a time, sand it down, wire wheel, treat with p...

Re: Wot, not another '79 Targa resto thread

Hi Peter, Patches are looking better. A few things I do when patch repairing. 1. I don't use metal grinding pads to remove paint or rust, I use strip discs, as this doesn't thin the metal that you want to weld on, like this..https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Strip-and-Paint-Rust-removal-115-mm-Angle-Grinde...

Re: Wot, not another '79 Targa resto thread

Peter, You are doing well, if you aren't happy with something, come back to it & do again it's all good practice. Grinding weld is a skill, like welding, I use an old angle grinder shaft in a battery drill with the 5mm disc, it's slow, so doesn't do damage if you slip off the weld, small used on...

Re: Porsche restorer

I'm a newbie around here as you might guess. I did a search for Steve Kerti & found nothing, I was really surprised tbh, considering his background & skills on early Porsche, I thought this forum would be aswash with his work. I've never met Steve, but follow his work on FB, he makes panels ...

Re: Wot, not another '79 Targa resto thread

I'd never suggest anything other than a chassis jig with the correct bracketry for a 100% appraisal, but a tramel is a very simple but accurate way of measuring symmetry of frames. Although I wouldn't buy one of this guys cars, I do think there is a lot to learn from watching him work, judge for you...

Re: Wot, not another '79 Targa resto thread

Ambitious project well done for getting stuck in. I would be really cautious about tackling the sills without mounting the body on jig or frame and checking first why the doors don't line up, you could be over looking a big problem. A repair jig with brackets is the best way, easy if you are pro, bu...
