Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
A bit more progress today, but fairly short as I popped into a car show in my 964, and I have a cold (not man flu). The front suspension still fought me, but in a different way to yesterday. The bottom bolt came out easily enough, but the track rod end didn't want to budge. I considered cutting it, ...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Darren The condition of the wheel arches is like the rest of the car - far better than expected. It is changing the direction of the restoration. The initial plan was to get it to back on the road with minimal fuss. Given how good a starting point I have, I will be spending a little more money and l...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Today has been about getting the front suspension off. What appeared to be a straight forward task became a frustrating day. It started well enough with getting the very rusty brake disk off. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e209/phillynch38/P1020275_zpsgdpodquk.jpg The problems started with the bo...

Re: Restoring my first 914
Underseal - I feel your pain. I am "lucky" insofar as my car hasn't got the black underseal, but hasn't been on UK roads so isn't wildly rust, but does have evidence of rust spots. My dilemma is slightly different in I am torn as to weather do some touch in, or whilst the car is on the rot...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Darren I have never seen the issue with using household appliances for such tasks, but some people are so unreasonable.....!! I have been looking at alternatives. Cold water parts washers are functional but really need to be heated. Adding a heater is precarious. I am not a fan of toxic chemical bas...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Another busy weekend. Now I know what I am facing with the engine, I am taking time to research my options. Also, I am loathe to get the engine complete without somewhere to install it. So, this weekend I have turned my attention back to the car. I have stripped the rear suspension off, as shown in ...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
ECUs are made by several companies, each have their merits. John's site refers to the Megasquirt system, which seems popular as it is viewed as cheap, especially when bought in component form. I have used Motec and DTA over the years. Motec is exceptional but very expensive. I will be using either D...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Andrew I have ordered a few bits of kit from Mario. Do you know who the person in Birmingham is? I am very close to Birmingham. I have run programmable ECUs in on competition engines in sprint and hillclimb cars for the past 10 years. It makes such a difference to drivability and idling compared to ...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
So, a busy weekend stripping an engine. Saturday was spent getting to a position where I could see what I was working on. Stripping an engine is difficult enough at the best of times, but this one was filthy, so I decided to spend some time cleaning it. Before http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e209/...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Engine rebuild will include tweaks. I will definitely take the capacity up to 1900. I will also be retaining fuel injection, but the control of this will most likely not be via the existing D Jetronic. I don't know if my system is working, and I know that I can get it tested, but having looked at th...

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
Stuart A "new" engine could be a whole world of pain. I can get one that is running, but could have low compression / drop a valve etc. Matching numbers sort of appeals, but isn't compulsory. What I am hoping my thread will show is with a moderate amount of effort and a sensible amount of ...

Chaps
Thanks for the kind thoughts. The engine is pretty much as I was expecting - a rebuild was always part of the plan.
Darren - I ran out of time tonight, I will try and look at the gearbox tomorrow

Re: Olympic Blue / Silver metallic 1972 US Import 1.7L
The strip down continues. For reasons which I put down to a 50/50 choice I chose to remove the head and pistons from 3 and 4. Apart from the oil water mix and some rusty bits, strip down was fairly undramatic. There are plenty of books and youtube videos so I haven't overdone the photo record. http:...
