Re: 914 Washer Switch conversion
Sorry and all that, don’t mean to tread on anyone’s toes, but is this not a bit like a re-invention of the wheel? It’s over 25 years since I restored a couple of 914s, but column switches seem to either have non-functioning contacts contained, or they don’t: as luck would have it I had one of each (...

Re: Fitting Cibie Spotlights
Reinforcing plates & cable routing (note fibreglass bonnet) 914lights6.jpg Factory-fitted to a 916 9142330018-2.jpg An unintended consequence is that the weight of the lights means that the bonnet springs - even on their maximum setting - are no longer strong enough to hold the bonnet up. Can be...

Re: 914 RHD headlights
Cibie 7” units work well: such as these https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/cibie-headlamp-units-7-52947.html They seem to be available most places, including eBay. The 914 h/lamp mount unit has to be cut away slightly to clear the sidelight bulb. Whether they would give any superior light output than the...

Re: Fitting Cibie Spotlights
Those Cibie lights are designed as an accessory for the DS, and the bonnet on a 914 is not steep enough for them: as they are they would end up pointing at the sky, beyond adjustment. You will have to make up some sort of angled spacer on which to mount them, about 7/8mm at the rear tapering to 1mm ...

Re: Anyone had their 914 body shell stripped?
On two separate occasions, many years ago, I had 914 shells ‘dry stripped’ at the place down in Sussex (still there) which seemed to work ok. They also did work for Porsche GB, which was a powerful recommendation: they had a then-new 964 cabrio on which to strip the back end, which some lowlife had ...

Re: Front oil cooler pipes
Flexibles via thermostat on rear bulkhead same as pic above. Rigid stainless tube (it acts as a cooler in itself) up r/h sill to rear of front arch. Car had been fitted with a/c from new, so the holes were there: if not, they could be duplicated. Flexibles around front arch to cooler inlet. Routing ...

Re: Kombi Instrument
The 52mm VDO fuel gauge which is compatible with the 914 sender unit is (or was) their p/n 301 272 052 001 as below "for use with dip pipe sender unit". I say "was" as I got one over 20 yrs ago and they may not still do them. However the VDO gauges that are offered nowadays by th...

Re: Kombi Instrument
Oh and a original small fuel gauge was at least 900 plus !!! Que? It may be a challenge getting the right 52mm gauge that works with the original sender, but they are available and for about 10% of that. (Unless they mean the original item: but who has ever seen one, and would recognise it if they ...

Re: 914/6 - Texas GT
But the idea of having to drop the engine every time you want to adjust the timing, or to attend to a critical job like replacing the fan belt, is simply impractical / madness. It can all be done with the engine in place: and without disturbing the integrity of the car (it's not called a 'firewall'...

Re: 914/6 - Texas GT
Having since DMOR, you're right - for now. It appears to be the result of a cockup, why should anyone be surprised. In 2001 new legislation was passed as no. plates became LLNN LLL, governing the new plates & those issued prior to that. At the time both reflective plates and tax-free historics w...

Re: 914/6 - Texas GT
You sure about that? My own understanding is that tax status (ie historic) has nothing to do with reflective plates (construction and use): that's 2 bits of legislation they'd have to change. If so the DVLA been very quiet about it: and since the introduction of ANPR the old bill have been a bit hot...

James May
Was James May constantly banging on about being in a 911 last night, while all the time he was in a 912 (or 902)?
