Cheers Roy, I've replaced the ignition switch, shined up the battery ground and gearbox / body grounds as part of recent previous electrical shenanigans. The electrical burning smell is definitely coming from the starter motor. I'll give all the starter connections a good clean up before it goes bac...

Thanks fellas. I've read in a number places that a tap will do the job, but recommendations vary from 1/4-18 to 14mm via M12 and 1/2 inch, none of which I nor my local hardware store has. They recommended tapdie.com but the chap I spoke to there was unusually unhelpful and I didn't fancy spending £9...

I'm on my second Optima red-top and would recommend them. While they won't solve any underlying issues they are 6v, maintenance free and cope well with the stress of infrequent use, dry float bowls and mechanical fuel pumps. You'd be surprised how far you can get from home on a fully charged Optima ...
