Hi Helen, I'm pretty sure I have your old black and white 914 seats, I have them in my 73 1.7 and absolutely love them!

I also have the same dilemma, to remove all the old underseal or just remove the flakey bits and recoat. t will be interesting to see what you end up doing, If it was a lot easier to remove it would be a no brainer.
