Re: Engine issue

If not clearly misfiring then it still had at least some spark and some fuel. Spark tends to be binary rather than partial failure, so a whole engine power reduction I’d definitely call fuel supply out first. Unless of course your floor mat is under the throttle pedal or the linkage is about to drop...

Re: Engine issue

Collapsing fuel line maybe? Stopping just lets it recover long enough to get something through then goes again.

Is it misfiring or just losing power?

What engine/fuel/ignition system? Your MFI 2.7?

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

…but with all the cranking I’ve done i think I’d expect to smell a bit of fuel, so that avenue seems worth investigating 100%. You’ve proven spark. Only one other ingredient needed! (Except air!) I’d imagine if the temp sensor wasn’t working you get the wrong mixture, i.e leaner than you’d ideally ...

Just throwing ideas out there…

What actually makes the spark on your car? I know you have the CANEM ecu for the fuel but where does the spark come from?

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

On my car there is a separate feed to the CDI box that powers it whilst cranking from the ‘start’ position of the key, then it switches to the always on in the ‘run’ position. It manifested itself as it would cough as you backed the key from start, but not long enough to actually start it. Could the...

Is the fuel pump still running whilst cranking?
Can hear it ignition on, but not when the starter is going.

Damn. I was thinking it was one of those multipin modern connectors rather than that chunky old school indestructible one!

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Sorry if I missed this further up the thread but basic questions sometimes are the best.

1. Is there fuel in the tank?
2. Is the fuel pump running?
3. Is power getting to the ECU?

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Fair enough, that’s broken! Slipped timing chain maybe?

Valves may look ok but probably warrant replacement.

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

There’s no (visible) scoring on the bores from that damage?
Difficult to see from the photos, but is the top of the piston clean or is it some deposit build ups that then look like damage?

The clicky bit might still work but a pin (male or female side) can be out of place. Can you get to it and have a look inside both halves?

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Maybe a pin backed out when the connector was stressed? Or maybe it broke a wire inside?

Anything coming out of the injectors? Forgot plug the ECU in? ;)
