Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Once new guides are pressed in they normally reamed to size to suit the new valves as they may close up as they are fitted.

Absolutely. Even if I didn’t finish it, the days I did were worth the drive down :)

Re: Road Tripping to the Pyrenees

Yes, we took the French autoroutes despite the complications of getting recovered off those roads they are super straight and low stress. We cringed on every one of those big right hand cloverleaf junctions, and of course the U.K. side once off the motorway, but yes made it home ok. Would it have ma...

Road Tripping to the Pyrenees

The drive up to Andorra was definitely better than the destination, but still we got to tick another country off the list :) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240527/1f4785e06ebeac543e1b346ca709c100.jpg The weather went south as we climbed and then the rain hitting the screen had that ‘thick’ look ...

Good plan. :)

You'll also be able to tell if you've got no compression i.e one valve tightened up so much it doesn't close properly.

Re: Road Tripping to the Pyrenees

As James notes my car woes had started by this point but I wasn’t ready to give up (just!) yet… and the roads were just amazing, so I just reduced the pace a little. Following Sladey in his GT4 was amusing as I was exploring every ounce of my underpowered 52 year old car whilst he was tickling along...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

If you are worried take it to a reputable machine shop to check. I’m not sure even the best home methods will be close enough to either confirm or deny.

Re: Road Tripping to the Pyrenees

I’d choose the Portsmouth- St Malo route mainly as I hate ferries! Going out at least this means you turn up in the evening, watch the sunset then wake up in France at 8 having cut out a good chunk of miles and a night in a hotel. We pressed on that day down to just outside Bilbau, a solid 9.5 hours...
