Nick, I tried this with my lenses, didn't give the result you might hope for, hence the painting on the outside that Andy recommends Unless you can get all the remaining chrome off without scratching or matting the inner surface the look of the paint is very poor. I even tried this with 'chrome' pai...

Bazz,
The original chrome is on the inside so you should be able to spray onto the outer surface without too much trouble.

I need to do my rear lenses so would be interested in detail shots once you've refined the process!

Unfortunately a lot of it is aerodynamics, not much you can do there without compromising the shape. My T has the same set up, but with 'S' front and rear rolls bars. It's still just as affected by crosswinds. Certainly giving the car a natural understeer bias by adding a front ARB and not the rear ...

915 gearbox lower cover plate material?

Can anyone tell me if the cover plate on the bottom of a '72 915 gearbox that supports the selectors is magnesium or ali? It's cracked, one I can weld up, the other... maybe not!

I like Domo's method, but if all else fails try: http://www.ruddies-berlin.de http://www.gowerlee.dircon.co.uk/ Or (say it really quietly) your local Porsche dealer? They may laugh and ignore your messages (maybe it's just me?) but you never know. I think they have sussed that I just ring up to set ...

Nope this is the first gearbox...Plenty of engines and stuff, but I've never braved gearbox internals before. But it really isn't that bad! I've got the big nut off now, holding 5th gear VERY tightly in soft jaws on the vice did the job. Felt a bit ugly at the time but has done the job without damag...

I've found the whine, nothing to do with the final drive, just third gear being worn. The surface finish has started to go on one of the pair :( All the synchros have already being turned around (at least once!) so that has blown my cheapskate gearshift fix...Also the third gear slider dog teeth are...

...and I'd imagine the wheel aperture might well be in a different place to accomodate the revised wheel base with the shorter trailing arms...other than that you'll be fine!

Spotted my plan exactly there Luke, the garage that did my MOT does powder coating so all the metalwork will be off soon. The relatively small cost of this has to be worth it versus me spending hours cleaning all up and making a poor job of painting it. Peter, Maybe that's what the whining noise was...

Pulled the lump out on Saturday night, so I'm ready to commence the stripdown 8) . Looking at the thing on the garage floor you can just see a hundred projects in front of you. Self control (normally dictated by wallet anyway) will have to be strong not to do stuff 'just whilst it's out'. It only to...

That will be too tight then....

Just managed to snap off my one of my Zenith 40TIN main jet holders whilst putting my carbs back together :( :( Teach me to conduct delicate operations at 11:00pm after 3 cans of Bodingtons... I can feel the straws being clutched at now, but does anyone have a spare? More than willing to offe...

Forgot your car had a whale tail, so reaching through the grill will be a challenge to put it mildly. Lets hope your friend comes back with some good information from JAZ tomorrow. If you do go for it the catch release lever has to be pulled from right to left as you look at the back of the car. It'...

One last thought is that the cable runs through a steel tube in the LH rear quarter panel. Have you got the snapped cable so you can tell were it is broken? An option would then be to cut into the tube just before it turns to enter the engine bay, find the end of the cable and pull with mole grips. ...
