Porsche hoard up’North

A friend has finally decided to part with his Porsche collection. I’ve been asked to be a point of contact because he’s a busy man. He has had various Porsches over the last thirty odd years – sixteen in total. At present there are eight left, mostly 911 with one 912 and a 356 cabriolet. This passio...

Re: 356 gearbox woes....

Hello Simon, I'm not far away either at Honley, between Holmfirth and Huddersfield. I've rebuilt 3 g/boxes so I might be able to help. I just follow the Workshop Manual. If there is a tight spot + clicking maybe one of the rear gear bolts has come loose (common problem) and unscrewed and is jambing ...

Re: SPEEDYCABLES ??

How do you know it is the gauge and not the sender or the wiring? Try a simple test - take the gauge wire(green) off at the sender and touch it to earth. Your gauge should go from full deflection to zero when grounded - ign. ON of course. If no joy make sure there is a supply to the back of the gaug...

Re: Problemoes

What a triumph!. And a great read. Well done.

John

PS. I wouldn't dwell on what bit was wrong, you've fixed it and that's what counts.

Re: 1960 T5B Restoration Pics

Phil,
That is a fantastic job on what was a difficult car! Well done.
I must say the continuous welding on the door skin is amazing - how did you prevent it distorting?
I assume it is MIG and not TIG?

Re: Advice On Registering with DVLA

Dan, I've been through this process a few weeks ago for my A which also came from the US. You could start by getting an information pack called Info 106 "How to import your vehicle into Great Britain". Essentially you then need to complete a V55/5 application form and provide a Customs and...

Re: Problemoes

Mike,
Fabulous job on the engine! I would be interested to know what the original pistons and cylinders were like. Do you attribute the mysterious rough running to the excess end float - what was it by the way?

on the road!

At long last I've finished my A. It's just the same as Roys', well not quite. What a job! Just been MOT'd but when I went over to Leeds DVLA for a new reg. I was missing a customs form, damn, so I've got the US plates on at the moment. http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo28/danjamds/lumixpics19-5-20...

Re: Balancing early 356 wheels

Hello Paul,
I bought an adapter from Mainely in the US for about $65 which works fine. It's an alumn. disc which bolts to the rim and has a centre hole allowing it to go on any machine.

problems

Sorry to hear your gremlins are still at work. Not read your saga for awhile but the excellent compression test rules out any major issues I would have thought. Regarding the acc. pump volume I've done this in the past by operating the pump ten times which makes it easier to measure although you sti...

problem gone

Mike, Wow, I'm pleased you found it! I'd been reading the saga for awhile and it's good to see success. Like Roy I'm curious how "bad" the valve clearances were. My flowmeter by the way needs holes or you would simply stall the engine. Just enough to give plenty of movement on the U-tube. ...

carbs

Mike, It strikes me that things go wrong as soon as you re-attach the ball joints. It is essential that the two vertical rods are slightly "loose". Just move the throttles slightly and make sure they return firmly on to the stops. If you snap the throttles wide open they always return but ...

Just to re-iterate what Roy and Barry have said I wouldn't give up now because I think you have eliminated ignition/pump/filter problems which leaves the carbs as suspect. You've cleaned the jets but have you removed the actual mixture adj. needles to see what they are like? With a bit of ingenuity ...

another leaky carb

I seem to have got the James flooded carb syndrome. With more fuel in the tank and the car standing on the level instead of on axle stands at the rear I've got petrol perculating into both carbs and dripping on to the tinware. When I removed the air cleaner on one side I saw 1/4" of petrol on t...
