Tuned lengths? Seems unlikely. Modern performance petrol engines have tuned lengths of pipe between the inlet duct and the plenum (filter box) but I doubt that will be the case here (although I could be wrong as usual). It's all about developing organ pipe resonances that help the engine breathe. Al...

Are these filters just mesh or is there another component (foam/fibre?) I would think that these are probably OK for racing (that's what it says on the advert) or limited road use but won't be so good for extensive road use. Filters have a small pore size (and hence big pressure drop per unit area) ...

...and as I recall the pain threshold is somewhere between 120-140dB (those lectures were longer ago than I care to admit!) So is this a case of a German bloke standing by the track and if his ears start bleeding the car is too noisy? Some of the development (Lotus) Elises were quite painful to driv...

OK, as my kids are only too keen to tell me my apprenticeship was a long (LONG) time ago. But I was always taught that you should use new nylocs and that the thread length should protrude from the nut 1.5 threads. I guess that the nylon can take a set if it is heated above its recrystallisation temp...

Hi, I have a 10 year old Seamaster that I wear all the time, and have been taking it back to Goldsmiths (where I bought it) in Leicester ever 3 ish years for a service. Same experience as others here, really. Costs around £200, and 2 year guarantee that I have used once when it stopped for no reason...

Spare Tyre Size/Section
I have a '71E and am just about to replace all of the tyres with new. Old ones are OLD and walls are showing signs of cracking. Looking like CN36's are my best bet having followed similar threads on here before. My question is, will a 185/70VR15 fit under the bonnet in the spare wheel well, or did t...

Essence of the Car 911 Model
I was wondering if anybody else fancied one of these..... http://www.49onthehill.co.uk/Porsche911.jpg I used to work with David at Ricardo and he started making small models of interesting or significant cars that we worked on as a company. When I got my 911 last year I asked Dave if he would have a...

My '10 cents' worth. Wheel bearings sometimes fail with a 'grumbling' noise rather than a squeak. The 'grumbling' happens as the bearing surfaces degrade (hence more play which can be detected by trying to move the wheel). A simple test would be to compare play on left and right sides of the car - i...
